What is dermatosurgery?
Skin lesion surgery, or dermatosurgery, covers all surgical procedures that treat cutaneous and subcutaneous lesions of all kinds.
Here are a few cases where dermatosurgery may be indicated:
→ Moles (“nevi”)
→ Lipomas (benign fatty tumors)
→ Angiomas (benign vascular tumors)
→ Sebaceous cysts
→ Malignant melanomas
→ Basal cell or squamous cell carcinomas
How does the procedure work?
A dermatosurgery procedure consists in removing a cutaneous or subcutaneous lesion. For a malignant lesion (malignant melanoma, for example), a safety margin is taken: the surgeon cuts wide, removing the lesion together with a margin of surrounding healthy skin to avoid leaving tumor residue that could lead to recurrence.
After removing the lesion, the surgeon closes the wound with a simple suture. Sometimes a skin flap is needed to cover the wound left by a large excision (bulky lesion).
The removed lesion is always sent to the laboratory for histological examination so that a malignant condition is never missed.
What is the recovery like?
Type of anesthesia
Most often local anesthesia alone. Sometimes, in the case of a long or complex operation (tumor of large volume, sensitive site, etc.), general anesthesia is necessary.
Hospitalization
Usually on an outpatient basis. Hospitalization for one to a few days may be necessary in some cases.
Scars
Depends on the type of lesion removed. Sometimes a simple suture is enough to close the skin after removing a small lesion. Sometimes, in the case of excision of a major lesion, a skin graft is necessary (skin flap taken from another area of the patient's body).
What results can you expect?
Skin surgery (dermatosurgery or cutaneous surgery) is performed to remove skin lesions, as well as to treat unsightly scars or scars with an unusual appearance that require surgery.
How much does it cost?
From €150
A detailed quote is given after the consultation. For a cosmetic procedure, French law requires a cooling-off period of at least 15 days between the quote and the surgery.
FAQ

Dermatosurgery can be performed on an outpatient basis.
It depends on the lesion to be treated: removal of a cyst, an unsightly nevus, or a benign or malignant tumor.
The scar fades over time, and it is important to protect it from the sun for a year.
These procedures are usually not very painful and are easily relieved with usual painkillers.
As with any procedure, there are risks, and complications may occur (bleeding, infection, wound dehiscence, scarring problems, etc.). They are uncommon and can be managed promptly by the surgeon during post-operative check-ups. An information sheet from the French Society of Plastic Surgery will be given to you before the procedure.
