Dr Maxence Thomas, plastic surgeon, performs FUE hair transplants at the Clinique Esthétique Aquitaine in Bordeaux. The transplant moves hair follicles taken from the back and sides of the head to the areas that are thinning: hairline, temples or crown.
Is a hair transplant right for me?
Not all hair loss calls for a transplant. The consultation first looks for the cause of the hair loss and assesses how it is progressing. A transplant may be offered to some men and women, particularly with androgenetic alopecia. Whether it is indicated depends on the density and quality of the donor area, the extent of the thinning areas, age, medical history and expectations. Further tests or medical treatment may be needed before considering surgery. As the supply of hair that can be harvested is limited, the plan takes into account how the baldness may progress.
How does an FUE transplant work?
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) involves harvesting grafts one by one, each containing one or more hairs, with a small circular instrument, then implanting them in the areas to be treated while respecting the direction and distribution of the hair. Unlike the FUT technique, it does not require removing a strip of scalp, but it leaves small dot-like scars. The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthesia; its length depends on the number of grafts and the extent of the areas treated.
When can the result be seen?
The result develops gradually. The transplanted hairs may fall out in the first weeks, then initial regrowth appears around the third or fourth month. The result is usually assessed at around twelve months. A transplant does not always recreate the original density and does not stop the loss of non-transplanted hair: medical treatment and follow-up may be offered.
How much does a hair transplant cost in Bordeaux?
The price of an FUE hair transplant is generally between €3,900 and €4,300, depending on the extent of the areas to be treated and the planned number of grafts. A personalised quote is given after the consultation, followed by a legal cooling-off period of at least 15 days before the procedure.
