What is a breast lift?
Breast ptosis is defined by sagging of the gland and stretching of the skin that surrounds it. The breast sits too low and often looks “empty” in its upper part. Dr Maxence Thomas corrects it surgically at the Clinique Esthétique Aquitaine in Bordeaux.
Ptosis may be present from the outset but most often occurs after significant weight loss or after a pregnancy with breastfeeding.
How does the procedure work?
The operation consists in reshaping the breast by acting on the skin envelope and on the glandular tissue. The gland is concentrated and placed in the right position. The skin envelope must then be adapted, which requires removing excess skin in order to ensure good hold and a beautiful shape for the new breast.
In the case of very severe ptosis, the scar has the shape of an inverted T with three components: periareolar around the areola between brown skin and white skin, vertical between the lower pole of the areola and the submammary fold, horizontal hidden in the submammary fold. The length of the horizontal scar is proportional to the extent of ptosis.
The procedure may be combined with breast augmentation or breast reduction.
What is the recovery like?
Hospitalization
Performed on an outpatient basis, the patient is discharged the same day after being monitored for a few hours.
Sometimes, a hospital stay of 24 hours may be indicated.
Scars
They vary according to the treatment method chosen. Periareolar, vertical and horizontal under the breast depending on the case.
Post-operative course
Little post-operative pain (painkillers are prescribed), swelling and bruising. A dressing is applied and must be changed regularly.

A detailed quote is given after the consultation. For a cosmetic procedure, French law requires a cooling-off period of at least 15 days between the quote and the surgery.

It is important to keep in mind that scars are an inherent aspect of surgery, and that scars may vary depending on the patient. The scars are permanent, but they fade over time.
The Urgotouch laser can be used immediately after surgery to help scars fade.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Local anesthesia may exceptionally be offered, depending on the case.
The duration of the operation varies between patients: a breast lift takes 1 to 2 hours depending on the case.
In general, the procedure is performed as day surgery at the clinic. Depending on the degree of ptosis, an overnight stay may be offered.
The results are immediately visible: the breasts are lifted and round. After a few months, they take on a natural, supple shape. The new shape of the breasts can be appreciated about 6 months after the operation.
The final results are long-lasting, but they will not escape the effects of time: the breasts will be subject to both gravity and the natural aging process. Some degree of recurrence can be expected over time.
The procedure itself is minimally painful. Post-operative pain, discomfort, and swelling should be minimal.
As with any procedure, there are risks, and complications may occur (bleeding, infection, wound dehiscence, scarring problems, etc.). They are uncommon and can be managed promptly by the surgeon during post-operative check-ups. An information sheet from the French Society of Plastic Surgery will be given to you before the procedure.
