Men’s cosmetic surgery in Bordeaux

Dr Maxence Thomas, plastic surgeon, treats two requests specific to men at the Clinique Esthétique Aquitaine in Bordeaux: gynecomastia and penoplasty. Other procedures are also suitable for men, such as liposuction, blepharoplasty or hair transplant.

What is gynecomastia and how is it treated?

Gynecomastia is an enlargement of the breasts in men, on one side or both. When it is caused by excess fat (adipomastia), liposuction is enough to correct it. When it is due to enlargement of the mammary gland, the procedure consists of removing this glandular tissue. If the skin is slack, it is tightened during the same operation.

The procedure takes about an hour (up to two hours depending on the case), usually under general anaesthesia (local is possible when the gynecomastia is very mild), as a day case. The scars are usually hidden at the edge of the areola. A few days off work are needed and sport can be resumed after 3 to 4 weeks.

What does penoplasty involve?

Penoplasty aims to increase the size of the penis at rest, in length, girth or both. Lengthening consists of releasing the suspensory ligament to free the part of the penis buried under the pubis; the gain is mainly visible at rest. Girth enhancement relies on injecting your own fat around the corpora cavernosa.

The procedure takes 1 to 2 hours under general anaesthesia. One night in hospital may be needed after lengthening, whereas girth enhancement by fat grafting is a day case. Sexual intercourse and sport must be avoided for 3 weeks.

How does the consultation work?

The consultation is a time for listening: Dr Thomas takes note of your request, examines you and checks that the procedure is suited to your situation. He explains the proposed technique, its limits and its risks. As a guide, gynecomastia surgery starts from €2,250 and penoplasty from €3,950. A detailed quote is given. For a cosmetic procedure, French law requires a cooling-off period of at least 15 days between the quote and the surgery.
