What is upper blepharoplasty?
A blepharoplasty, performed by Dr Maxence Thomas at the Clinique Esthétique Aquitaine in Bordeaux, aims to reduce the signs of aging of the eyelids and to replace a “tired” look with a more rested and relaxed appearance.
In particular, it opens up the eyes by subtly correcting excess skin on the upper eyelids.
How does the procedure work?
The surgeon makes an incision in each upper eyelid to remove the excess skin.
If necessary, he also removes the small fat pads that often form at the inner corners of the eyes.
Finally, he closes the wound with very fine sutures.
What is the recovery like?
Hospitalization
It is not necessary. The intervention is done on an outpatient basis, the patient is discharged the same day after a few hours of observation.
Scars
Barely visible, as they are placed in the natural eyelid crease and the sutures are made with very fine non-absorbable thread.
Post-operative course
Swelling, slight bruising, stinging eyes (eye drops are prescribed) and blurred vision. These effects are normal and disappear quickly.
What results can you expect?
It takes 1 to 6 months to truly appreciate the result. This is the time needed for the tissues to regain their full suppleness and for the scars to fade as much as possible.
The results of a blepharoplasty are generally among the longest-lasting in cosmetic surgery. The removal of the fat “bags” is almost permanent, and they usually never come back.
However, the skin continues to age and the resulting laxity may, in the long run, cause the eyelids to fold again. Even so, a new procedure is rarely considered before about twelve years.
How much does it cost?
From €2,250
A detailed quote is given after the consultation. For a cosmetic procedure, French law requires a cooling-off period of at least 15 days between the quote and the surgery.
FAQ
The scar is hidden in the upper eyelid fold, so it is not visible when the eyes are open.
The skin on the eyelids is very thin and generally allows the scar to fade quickly until it is almost imperceptible.
Upper blepharoplasty is performed under local anesthesia, with or without sedation.

The excess skin is removed during the procedure, which opens up and rejuvenates the eyes. It takes 1 to 6 months, however, for the swelling to settle and the scar to fade before the final result can be judged.

As with any procedure, there are risks, and complications may occur (bleeding, infection, wound dehiscence, scarring problems, neurological disorders, etc.). They are uncommon and can be managed promptly by the surgeon during post-operative check-ups.
